The second shotgun deer hunting season will come to a close this Sunday and Dallas County hunters have filled a lot of tags.
Dallas County Department of Natural Resources Officer Dustin Eighmy described the weather as perfect for the first shotgun season and hunters were having success but that’s been a contrast for the current second season.
“Season two here started on Saturday, not seeing as many hunters out there. I don’t know if it’s because of the weather or not, but so far it’s been (for) good hunters or having some success filling in their tags. And you know, you always have that hunter here and there that is complaining that there’s not enough deer and that that happens every year.”
Eighmy says in Dallas County there has been a little over 1,000 deer harvested that includes does and bucks and the state of Iowa sits right around 76,000. Eighmy notes that the state shoots for the 100,000 harvested deer benchmark every year. He adds that the county has over 500 antlerless tags left and once they run out they won’t sell anymore. Hunters can purchase those tags either through the DNR website or from the Dallas County Recorder’s Office.
