Greene County played Heart of Iowa Activities Conference girl/boy basketball in State Center last night vs. West Marshall. The host Trojans won the girls’ game 74-16, and the Rams took the boys’ contest by a 68-44 score.
WM is ranked third in Class 3A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Association. Senior Katy Ryerson, a U. of Northern Iowa recruit, scored 16 points, 14 in the first half when the Trojans opened up a 43-13 lead. The home team had four players reach double figures in points scored as they improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play. Te Rams scored just three second half points and fell to 0-6, 0-4. Freshman Kaycee Pittman had five points for the Rams.
A 31 point third quarter carried the Greene County boys to a comfortable victory after the Rams led 22-17 at halftime. Richard Daugherty had 20 of his game-high 27 points in the third stanza and he finished with five buckets from three-point range. Jesse Miller added 16 points, 10 in the final quarter. Brynley Ruzicka had a trio of three-point goals for nine points. Coach Chris Nelson’s team is 3-3 and 2-2 in the conference while the Trojans fell to 2-3 and 2-2. The win was the first on the road for the Rams this season.
Both games Tuesday were broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Next up for Greene County is a home girl/boy doubleheader in Jefferson with Perry, followed by a non-conference Saturday afternoon twin bill at Kuemper Catholic in Carroll.
