1994 Jefferson-Scranton High School graduate Kris Curnyn, now Kris Curnyn-Hagedorn, was inducted into the Iowa Association of Track Coaches on Saturday in Ames. Mike Jay, the Chair of the IATC Hall of Fame Committee read her bio and among those in attendance from Jefferson were her parents, John and Alana Curnyn, along with her high school throwing coach, Tim Buenz.
She won three straight Class 2A State titles in the discus throw, was a State runner-up in the shot put, a Drake Relays Champion in discus and runner-up in the shot, and won 31 of 34 discus competitions in high school. The Jeffettes won the Raccoon River Activities Conference title all four years, District titles all four years, and took home the Championship trophy in 2A in 1994. Her shot put and discus records still stand for the Jefferson-based girls’ track & field program.
At Iowa State, she qualified seven times for NCAA Championships, bringing home All-American honors in the weight throw (indoors) and hammer throw (outdoors). She was a Big 12 Champion and record holder in the discus.
Curnyn-Hagedorn, her husband, Josh, and their children, live in Adel.
