Snow, ice and freezing rain can make for some tough driving conditions during the winter months.

Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Kempf says changing driving habits for the winter months is extremely important, especially when the weather is being uncooperative.

He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that driving in winter weather requires slowing down and leaving more room between vehicles, not using cruise control, not braking quickly or making sharp turns, and staying alert. Kempf mentions that bridges are a place where ice forms easily, as wind can get under the bridge and cause it to cool quicker and freeze any ice or snow that may be on it. He adds that a slow steady speed can help keep accidents from happening.

Black ice is another danger that Kempf says many people can come across. He points out that it’s something that can form on any road, and is usually caused by melting snow. Black ice is difficult to see at any time of day, but especially during the night.
