Greene County’s High School wrestling team was weathered out on what was to have been season opening action in Jefferson on Tuesday. That means the long trip northeast to Independence and the Friday/Saturday Cliff Keen Independence Invitational will open the season for Coach Zach Beekman’s Rams. It’s one of the premier early season tournaments in the state and the Rams’ two Division I college recruits are part of what makes this such a high level event. McKinley Robbins is committed to Oregon State and Kale Petersen is an Iowa Hawkeye recruit.

Zach Beekman, head coach of the Rams, said of the pair going DI, “It wasn’t necessarily a surprise. You knew it was going to happen, just didn’t know when, or where they were going to go. They are really excited for this season, and knowing it’s their last one in high school and there’s something special about it. There’s a different atmosphere in our room than there has been in the past.”

A year ago, the tournament at Independence featured at least 6 State Champion wrestlers and this year looks to be similar.
