The winter basketball season will officially kick off tonight as Perry host the first Mega Night of the season when Boone visits the Sports Pavilion for a 6:00 varsity girl’s tip, followed by the boy’s 7:30 matchup.  The two teams once shared the Raccoon River conference.

In the first game, it will be a battle of early season unbeatens,  The Perry girls rolled through their first two opponents of the season defeating both Des Moines North and Ft Dodge St Edmond.  Senior Lydia Olejniczak has been unstoppable in the first two games averaging 27 points per conetest.  Boone has been equally impressive through their first two tune-ups, hammering Webster City 69-41 and Heart of Iowa school Nevada 51-37.

It will be the season debut for the Perry boys squad as Head Coach David Morris is optimistic his team will take a big leap from last year’s 2-20 performance.  The Bluejays will still be one of the youngest teams in the state, but will feature a number of returning players, still wearing the underclassmen label.  Juniors Drake Levan, Kaelan Davis and Zander Mahler are expected to be some of the main offensive weapons this season.

“I am confident some of our experience that we gained last year will help us continue to grow this program in the right direction,” stated Morris.  “We have put a lot of time in this offseason with club and tournament basketball down in Des Moines playing against some of the best players in the state.  A majority of our guys have played over 30 games this spring, summer and fall.  I’m excited to see how these guys have grown.”

You can listen to both games tonight on KDLS and online at raccoonvalleyradio.com.  Shawn Kenney will provide the play by play.
