Deer freezer behind the Milwaukee Depot

The first shotgun deer hunting season is this weekend and Greene County Conservation is asking for the public’s help with a special request.

County Conservation Director Tanner Scheuermann encourages deer hunters to donate deer heads to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to further track Chronic Wasting Disease that was found last year in a whitetailed deer in Greene County.

“We’re actually helping the DNR out this year. We’ve got a couple of freezers posted at a couple of locations around the county. Right now, we’ve got one at Spring Lake (Park) right there south of our main shop and then we’ve got one at the Depot, south of the building. They’re bright, painted blaze orange so you can’t miss them. There’s ear tags inside and instructions on how to fill those out. You can just donate your deer head there and then that’ll get back and hopefully give some good data to the DNR.”

First shotgun season is December 3rd-7th, second shotgun season is December 10th-18th and early bow season continues until December 1st.
