As the bitter cold season has started, Dallas County Senior Life Solutions reminds folks that this can be the hardest time for many.

Senior Solutions Director Michelle Laurie says that Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that usually starts in fall and lasts throughout the winter when the days get shorter which affects how a person feels, thinks and handles daily activities. Laurie tells Raccoon Valley Radio that at least 25 percent of the country’s population is at risk of having this disorder and expresses some ways to combat SAD.

“The three main lifestyle and home remedies that can combat SAD are one making your environment sunny and bright. Keep your blinds open, your curtains open during the daytime. Let the sun shine in. Another is getting outside. It’s also essential to do so in the morning. Make sure you’re dressing appropriately and make sure that you’re safe. Even if it’s cold and cloudy outside, the light can help.”

Laurie says that older adults are most likely to get Seasonal Affective Disorder due to some factors that include vitamin D deficiency, hormonal changes and a pattern of self isolation. She points out that Dallas County Senior Life Solutions has group and individual therapy and these sessions allow someone to refer to themselves or refer others.
