A second annual event is happening in Jefferson this weekend as art is described through poems but in a different way.

Ekphrasis will take place this Sunday at 2pm at History Boy Theatre Company. Ekphrasis is a Greek word that refers to a form of writing, usually poetry, where the author describes another work of art, usually visual art. Jefferson Matters Tower View Team Chair Deb McGinn describes what this year’s event will include.

“This year our artists have been given a poem that was written by one of our Greene County poets and they will then in turn interpret that into a piece of visual artwork. Last year, it was the opposite, the poets did the artist’s work.”

McGinn points out a special guest speaker will also be at Ekphrasis with the Iowa Poet Laureate Debra Marquart, who has that distinction since 2019 and is a professor with Iowa State University.

Sunday’s event is free and open to the public.
