Dallas County New Opportunities reminding residents that applications are available for heating assistance to anyone that qualifies. 

Development Center Coordinator Beth Morman says  Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is federally-funded and is designed to assist low income families meet the cost of home heating by providing a one-time payment to the heating utility companies. Moreman explains qualified applicant must have a total household income of 200 percent below the federal poverty guidelines. She recommends those thinking about applying to act quickly.

“We are backed up with applications. So the sooner those applications come in, the faster we can get them processed. We know a lot of people are struggling right now to pay their bills, so the sooner they can get them in, the better. We also recommend appointments because appointments are getting you in faster. We’re processing your application faster. We do have a variety of appointments open.”

Morman adds to become eligible for the program all residents in the household must have proof of income, Social Security cards for everyone in the household, and an electric and gas billing statement. LIHEAP runs through April 1st and a home cannot have their heating disconnected in that time frame.
