New Opportunities in Guthrie Center has started their Toys for Tots drive for the holiday season.
New Opportunities of Guthrie County Family Development Center Coordinator Rhonda Huggins tells Raccoon Valley Radio that New Opportunities partners with the US Marine Corps for Toys for Tots. In conjunction with their program “The Giving Tree,” people in Guthrie County can volunteer to make a child’s holiday a little brighter.
Huggins mentions that there is some overlap between Toys for Tots, and other assistance programs, whether that be Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or one of the many others that they help with. She also says that there were quite a few children they helped through Toys for Tots last year.
“Well I can tell you we served about 150 kids last year.”
Huggins says that the most common items they see donated are Legos, Barbies, and arts & crafts supplies. She mentions that they like to try and get an assortment of toys for a variety of ages, because they give the toys to young children and teenagers.
For those wishing to make donations, grab a card off “The Giving Tree” at New Opportunities office in Guthrie Center City Hall, get what’s on the card, and then return to New Opportunities to drop the items off.
