Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center Schools Superintendent Josh Rasmussen recently released a statement addressing concerns with school bus safety.
In the last couple of weeks, a few school buses have had vehicles pass them while they are stopped with their red lights flashing, and signs out. Rasmussen says that it’s a dangerous situation for students, and that all incidents will be reported to the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office.
In the statement, Rasmussen shares some safety tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:
“Be alert and slow down in neighborhoods with school zones. Watch for children walking, playing or assembling at bus stops. Children arriving late to the stop may dart into the street without checking for traffic. Flashing yellow lights indicate a bus is preparing to stop or unload children. Other motorists should prepare to stop their vehicles.”
The statement also cautions motorists to fully stop their vehicles when the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended to help improve overall safety on the roads.
