A NEW Cooperative Representative (standing right) presenting a request

The Greene County Board of Supervisors met Monday in regular session.

During reports, County Attorney Thomas Laehn mentioned that he is working on a courthouse grounds and building policy to present to the Board at a future meeting about requests from the public to utilize those areas. During another discussion, the Board decided to put on next week’s agenda whether or not to approve a request from the Iowa State Association of Counties for $600 for a soil compaction study with Iowa State University Extension.

County Engineer Wade Weiss and Chris Durlam presented final cost estimates for improving the ground lights around the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower. Durlam showed the cost difference between having white and colored lights. The energy savings with switching would be about $1,000 annually. The total cost of the project is about $14,000 with the colored lights and the other required equipment for it. It was decided to have the topic discussed by the Bell Tower Community Foundation before a final decision is made.

The Board then heard an update from Boone and Greene County Probation Services. It was mentioned the initial pilot program included 20 clients and grew to close to 100 in 2021. They are also using Greene County Medical Center if any client is required to have testing done and they are wanting to start a new community service program for juveniles and adults, with hiring a part time coordinator to oversee that program.

Next, the Board approved a resolution for Operation Green Light for Veterans. Any residence or business is asked to display a green light from November 7th-13th in support of veterans. They also appointed Ashley Miller as Hardin Township Clerk because Carla Haupert is stepping down. Finally, the Board approved a request from NEW Cooperative for a second 45,000 gallon tanks for anhydrous ammonia at their site east of Churdan.
