U.S. Congresswoman Cindy Axne

A US Congresswomen wants to solve the problem regarding the baby formula shortage that occurred in the spring.

Iowa’s Third Congressional Representative Cindy Axne wrote a letter to the Food And Drug Administration Commissioner Robert Califf pushing for answers as to how the agency is working to prevent future shortages. Axne says she has more questions about the FDA’s internal review that found some systematic vulnerabilities.

“My letter asks the FDA to specify how the agency has already taken action to address these issues. They identified and in the agency’s response, how and under what timeline the agency plans to implement those recommendations determined from the review.”

She explains that the vulnerabilities included information technology systems that weren’t functioning, the lack of knowledge about the bacteria that was found in the infant formula and staffing and training issues. Axne notes that she wants to know what things will be implemented by the FDA to ensure this problem never happens again.
