Adair County Public Health is encouraging us to get immunized with the flu season in full effect.
Director Stephanie Claussen says that everyone six months or older is encouraged to get a seasonal flu vaccination every year. Claussen explains a flu vaccine can reduce severe illness along with hospitalization and death. She notes another reason to get the flu shot is because they update the formula every year to fight variants.
“The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, ACIP, they are a CDC advisory group. They do have a special recommendation for those 65 and older to get the high dose vaccine. High dose vaccines have a higher antigen count than regular vaccines to help those older adults produce a better immune response.”
Claussen says this high dose vaccine isn’t new but a recommendation this year. She states that those wanting to get the flu shot can call the public health office to set up an appointment.
