The Perry High School football team is shutting down the rest of the varsity season.
According Perry Activities Director Katelyn Whechel, the varsity team has sustained several injuries which has grown to a level that’s impacted how many healthy players are on the field. Because of health and safety, Perry football has canceled the rest of the varsity season, but will keep the lower levels pending the agreements with the remaining district teams to give playing opportunities for students. Whechel’s statement says in part:
“Our goal as coaches and administrators is to provide our student athletes with opportunities to compete while maintaining their health and safety…This decision was made with the best information we have at the time while consulting coaches, the Iowa High School Athletic Association, future opponents, medical professionals and gathering input from concerned parents and students.”
Whechel adds that while this decision will impact the entire football program, she encourages the Perry community to keep in mind the other factors this decision impacts, including football players, coaches, cheerleaders, marching band members and football fans as they move forward.
