It’s not common for a high school football team to clinch a district title with only three of five district games in the books, but that’s the case for the Greene County Rams. Coach Caden Duncan’s team has won Class 2A District 8 for the second straight season. They are 5-1 overall and 3-0 in district play and are ranked fifth in the Iowa High School Athletic Association Power Index and seventh by the Des Moines Register.

A set of circumstances has allowed the Rams to clinch so early and get a number one seed and home game when the 2A playoffs begin on Oct. 21. Shenandoah cancelled the rest of their varsity schedule after week five, and that’s where Greene County was to have played on Oct. 7. Instead, the Rams collect a forfeit and will be 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the district with one regular season game remaining. That contest is Oct. 14 in Jefferson vs. Clarke (Osceola). The Indians and Red Oak both have two district losses, and Des Moines Christian and Clarinda each have one loss in the district, but that one loss is to Greene County. So, the Rams hold the tie-breakers for the top spot, should it come down to that.

No game for the Rams this week, but KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com will have the Oct. 14 game vs. Clarke “live” and play-by-play with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
