A small crowd gathered on a crisp autumn Friday morning for a ribbon cutting ceremony at Daubendiek Park in Jefferson.

Jefferson Parks and Recreation Director Denny Hammen says an idea for an 18-hole disc golf course was brought to him by private citizens. Through fundraising efforts, sponsorships and a Greene County Community Foundation grant, the idea became a reality. Co-organizer Steve Kohl gave his reaction to having the course open after putting in lots of work.

“Some people thought it was still open when we were still working on it. So you saw people playing off the dirt tee pads. But it’s been getting a lot of attention, a lot of people from surrounding communities – up to 2.5 hours – driving in to play here. Like we mentioned earlier it’s never really done. So we thought, ‘Yeah we built the course, we’re done, we’re ready to go, we cut the ribbon, we’re done.’ It’s never done. We did just organize a club, so we’ll just continue to making improvements and continue trying to get more people coming into Jefferson and play.”

The course is free and open to the public to play on. Participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment, but the Greene County Community Center has some discs for those who don’t have their own.
