A member of the Adair Fire and Rescue made the climb of a National Football League stadium to honor the 343 firefighters who lost their lives from the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001.
Assistant Chief Matt Richter says he signed up for the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in Green Bay, Wisconsin on September 10th and were invited to climb 343 stories at Lambeau Field which was the equivalent to the height of the World Trade Center. Richter tells Raccoon Valley Radio they get a little bit of a glimpse of what it was like to be a firefighter during 9/11.
“At, I believe it’s a 78, or 77 floor, the equivalent of that. You ring a bell. That’s the highest known, highest last known position of a New York firefighter.”
Richter says this was his fourth year doing the climb at Lambeau Field and he explains it’s an honor to represent the Adair Fire Department.
“It’s a good feeling that you’ve accomplished something that’s bigger than you. You wear a badge, and you climb in honor of one of the fallen firefighters on that day.”
Richter also says that this event was not just open to firefighters but also police officers, emergency services and anyone willing to participate. He also notes that he has done a stair climb at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana in the past. All proceeds collected from the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb went to the National Fallen FireFighters Association.
