Two bird hunting seasons are underway across Iowa and there are some options for hunters in Greene County.
Greene County Conservation Director Tanner Scheuermann tells Raccoon Valley Radio with dove and teal seasons in effect, the best public hunting option is Dunbar Slough, with a few additional areas for teal hunting around Goose Lake, Finn Pond and Pounds Pits in the county. He relies on what Conservation Officer Aaron Arthur said about dove hunting in the county.
“He said numbers are okay. He’s hearing a lot about that the migrations already moved through a little earlier than normal. So not as many birds I think in the past, but I think hunters are still successful.”
Scheuermann clears up some confusion he’s heard about what is required for those that dove hunt.
“For dove hunting, you just need your regular hunting license and your habitat stamp. But for any other migratory birds, which will include all of your waterfowl, you’ll need that migratory bird stamp and your federal duck stamp.”
Scheuermann adds the Greene County Conservation Board is looking to install additional dove plots to encourage more birds to stop in the county. He reminds hunters they need to report their harvest numbers to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources online through the Harvest Information Program (HIP) by clicking the link below. The dove hunting season is now through November 29th and teal season ends September 16th.
