The Greene County High School construction class has its project for the year.

The School Board approved at their August meeting for the class to build a storage shed at the high school. Superintendent Brett Abbotts says the facility will be around 35-by-100 square feet with four overhead doors and located southeast of the high school. The shed will house maintenance and athletic equipment, along with equipment from performing arts. The class was looking to build another house to sell, however, the estimated cost was going to be over $300,000 and the district had no upfront interested buyers.

Abbotts points out the students will still get most of the skills and experience with this project like they would if they were building a home.

“So they’ll still get some experience with framing, drywalling, putting up sheet metal, and doing some of the concrete work. Not all students will do all of the concrete work, but they’ll still get some experience there that they would get when they build a house.”

Abbotts shares his thoughts on 12 students that are enrolled in the class.

“Really excited about the fact that our programs are growing. I just talked to (Career Academy Specialist) Teresa Green and said we’re looking at almost 40 students now who are enrolled in our career academy, so those numbers are up there too. And I think that just really kind of speaks to the kind of prowess that our career academy has and the opportunities that we are providing for kids.”

The School Board set a limit not to exceed $250,000 with payment to come from the physical plant and equipment levy (PPEL) and sales tax.
