High school football teams based in Jefferson and Perry have played for a Cowbell donated in 1928 by the Rotary Clubs of the two communities. The winning team takes the cowbell home until bringing it to the game the next year. It is one of Iowa’s oldest high school football “trophy” games, but teams from these two communities actually played each other in football for the first time in 1898 when the Perry YMCA team beat the Jefferson High School team.
As of late, Greene County owns a four game winning streak in the series with Perry’s last victory coming at Dewey Field in overtime in 2017. Overall, Jefferson-based teams own a 60-29 advantage and there have been two ties.
The Rams and Blue Jays meet tomorrow night in the renewal of the series with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Dewey Field in Perry. The game will be broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. For the Perry point of view, listen on 1310 AM KDLS, 99.7 FM and 94.3 FM.
