As sporting events and other activities begin to fill up the calendar, it’s important to remember to still get physical activity.
Dallas County Health Department Public Information Officer Ann Cochran says adults should remember to get approximately 30 minutes of exercise at least five times per week and Cochran says even with a full schedule, activity can still be worked in.
“The thirty minutes don’t have to be all at once; you can go for a 10 minute walk during your lunch break and then work out in your yard for 20 minutes when you get home to get more exercise.”
Cochran tells Raccoon Valley Radio children 6-17 should get 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity everyday. Cochran says physically active youth can see health benefits from their daily activity.
“Another thing to keep in mind is just because your child has recess during the school day doesn’t necessarily mean they are running, jumping, exercising (and) climbing. Some students spend their recess just talking with their friends, which is important too.”
Cochran says it’s important to ask children what they do during recess so then you can see if they have been getting 60 minutes of exercise per day.
