Dallas Center – Grimes football was looking for a key week 1 home victory over North Polk on Friday night in Grimes, but the Mustangs couldn’t find a way to bring home the victory in the close contest, falling by the score of 20-16.
DCG could not find footing early in the game as North Polk was able to score on a pick 6 to start the game and take the lead. DCG was able to grab a score before the half ended, but trailed 13-6. Second half, DCG got into the red zone kicking a field goal to make it 13-9, before both teams traded scores in the 4th quarter as DCG was just short of a victory.
DCG football was able to find some good numbers throughout the evening, quarterback Ty Mikkelsen finished 19/29 for 184 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Wide Receiver Zach Smid had 7 catches for 55 yards and a touchdown as well. On defense, Dayne Mauk finished with 12 tackles on the night including 10 solo stops, Lane Nelsen had 7 tackles, and both Cole Kestel and Tate Perrin had 6 tackles. Perrin had an interception, Kestel and Dalton Bergthold both had fumble recoveries.
The road does not get easier for DCG, as they will make the trip to Bondurant-Farrar in week 2, as they will have an exciting challenge on the horizon against one of the top teams in the state.
