The 50th anniversary of Jefferson’s Doreen Wilber gold-medal victory at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany in women’s archery is less than a month away. Wilber received many honors and accolades during her lifetime, and more since her passing several years ago. One of those came in the August 14 Des Moines Sunday Register. The publication acknowledged the 50th anniversary this year of the passing of Title IX, federal legislation prohibiting sex-based discrimination in any school or educational program that receives federal funding.
To celebrate 50 years of Title IX, the Des Moines Register selected 50 of the top female athletes from Iowa, and Doreen Wilber is on that list. The publication noted Wilber’s Olympic gold medal and other success on the national and international levels, her streak of never losing a state tournament from 1963-73, and being inducted into nine different Halls of Fame.
Her statue is on the south side of Lincoln Way in Jefferson near the Greene County Community Center.
