At their most recent meeting the Perry City Council accepted a grant from the Iowa Economic Development Authority that will help bring in more downtown housing.
The City of Perry was recently awarded $600,000 which will be passed to the owners of the Tin Pig Tavern for a downtown housing project which City Administrator Sven Peterson says will feature 13 units to be above the restaurant and brewery.
“I think sometimes we get stuck on housing is single family housing development and that’s it but really it’s across the whole gamut of housing options that people want to look at so I think this is one of those key housing options for whether it be young professionals or just people moving to town for the first time or somebody that wants to downsize and just kind of have somevdowntown living options.”
Peterson tells Raccoon Valley Radio that downtown housing is an important part of the ecosystem in the community as it has a different feel than an apartment building or single family home.
“The development of housing across that spectrum is important to us. So, this is one of the ways that we can address one of those housing sectors.”
The city was awarded the grant on June 14th and officially signed all the documents to execute the grant on August 1st.
