With the federal government making the announcement that there will no longer be free school lunches for all, local school districts are needing to raise their prices to compete with the cost of food.
The Adel-DeSoto-Minburn School Board recently approved an increase in food service pricing that includes higher charges for breakfast and lunches for all students and adults. Superintendent Greg Dufoe says it’s unfortunate that the free lunch program is no longer offered and some changes have been made in pricing.
“Our new Food Service Director Billie Veach analyzed our food service pricing stretching back two years and we had some modest increases for our lunches and the Board approved those in July and we have done communication and we’ll do more alerting (of) our families as to what those prices are.”
Dufoe tells Raccoon Valley Radio the increase in meal prices correlates to the impact that the coronavirus pandemic had on the supply chains as well as the increase in food prices.
“Our 25-cent increases are due to the cost of the commodities. There is no question, that’s the primary driver with the small increase that we are implementing.”
