The three concepts presented at Thursday's meeting

A public meeting was held Thursday evening at the Greene County Community Center in Jefferson to continue to discuss the possibility of an indoor pool.

The meeting started with results from a community input survey. Of those that responded, about 80-percent were from Jefferson and about 51-percent said they travel outside of Jefferson for aquatic activities. OPN Architects and Counsilman-Hunsaker then presented three possible concepts of designs and floor space for the indoor pool that would be attached to the east side of the current community center.

The first concept included four regulation swimlanes that could also be used for open programs. The second concept not only had four lanes, but also included a separate open area for programs, a hot tub and spray pad. The third concept had six swimlanes, a program and recreational area.

George Deines from Counsilman-Hunsaker
led the discussion

The estimated project cost ranged from $4.1-$9.4 million and the estimated operational expense ranged from $294,000-$479,000 between the three concepts.

Jefferson Parks and Rec Board member Tracy Deal said she was happy that this presentation included what an indoor pool area might look like, as well as the prices for construction and ongoing expenses. She pointed out how impressed the Board has been with the companies that have been doing this feasibility study.

“We have been very happy with the community feedback they’ve sought, with the information that they’ve gathered to be able to put those numbers together. All of those elements that go into it and having the pool consultants, who that’s what they do, I think is a big part of it is they eat, sleep and breathe designing pools and know what it takes to build them and operate them. So we’ve been very happy.”
Deal added that OPN Architects and Counsilman-Hunsaker will continue the study with the pool committee and the parks and rec board to determine the logistical details and finalize conceptuals. She invites anyone to be a part of the pool committee by contacting the community center. Thursday night’s presentation will be publicly accessible through the rec center soon.
