It was the third time this season that Winterset and Carlisle have met up, though the stakes were a little higher this time in the 4A state semifinals. On Wednesday afternoon, Winterset was able to complete the season sweep over Carlisle as they were able to put together a strong overall performance to tame the Wildcats 7-1. Winterset now has a 36-4 record with a 22 game winning streak.
Fireworks started in the top of the first inning, as Carlisle had a runner on second, a hit went out to left field, but Avery Darling was able to fire a rocket to home to get the runner out, keeping the score at zero. Winterset was able to break through in the third inning, as five runs come across, with Bridget Stover hitting an RBI single, Lauren Carter right behind her grabbing a bases loaded walk to make it 2-0, then Bailey Acton hitting a two run single that became three after an errant throw from the Carlisle left fielder.
That was all Thea Banning would need, as the senior was able to put up seven complete innings, one run given up, six hits, and seven strikeouts as well. Jena Young was able to hit her state leading 22nd home runs of the season on a majestic shot out to right field. Ten hits were put up in total, and zero errors committed from the Huskies.
Winterset will be taking on three seed Dallas Center – Grimes tonight at 7:30 pm at Fort Dodge. Winterset will be looking for their third title in six years, and first since 2020. Coverage will be on True Country K1079, KKRF app, and raccoonvalleyradio.com. Pregame coverage will be a few minutes before first pitch.
