The wait is officially over as sweet corn will make its first appearance at the Greene County Farmers Market with Deal’s Orchard.

Chris Deal with Deal’s Orchard says their first planting of sweet corn was pushed back to April 10th.

“For us this is a little bit later. There have been years we’ve been out in March at least getting sweet corn in the ground. It was kind of a tough spring, cold and wet, and didn’t really create a great growing condition. So that’s why we’re talking here in mid-July and finally getting the first corn available for people to enjoy.”

Chris points out they target 4th of July as the time frame to start harvesting their first batch of sweet corn, but they typically do 6-8 plantings throughout the summer and early fall months. However, Chris notes they also had to increase the price of their sweet corn for consumers.

“Like everybody, we have seen some pretty significant increases in terms of the input that we need in order to be able to put the sweet corn and be able to grow it. Across the board, sweet corn prices are up. We want to try to keep prices as reasonable as possible.”

Chris adds a dozen ears of sweet corn is $8 and they will be at the Greene County Farmers Market every Tuesday for the rest of the season, weather permitting, from 4-6pm near the Thomas Jefferson Gardens of Greene County.
