Last month the Iowa High School Athletic Union Board of Control voted to eliminate Sectional Tournaments in all classes, meaning all three classes of competition will now qualify individuals for State only through Districts. The first Saturday of Feb. was Sectional Tournament Saturday and that will now be the weekend the State Dual Meet Tournament in all classes is held.
Greene County head wrestling coach Zach Beekman talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about the change. “They’re going to move it and put it the same weekend as girls’ State now that girls’ wrestling has been sanctioned. They’re going to run those together in Coralville, which I think is a good opportunity. I like the change and think there will be a lot of coaches that like the change. It will be interesting to see the response (once it’s held in 2023). Is it better to have it earlier or is it better to wait until after individual State. I don’t know if there’s an answer to that yet, but I think this change is in the right direction.”
The first weekend in Feb. of 2023 is when Girls’ State and Boys’ Dual Meet State will be held in Coralville.
