Winterset Huskies baseball and softball are both competing in state competition today, with the baseball team in Iowa City and the softball team in Fort Dodge. Winterset baseball is the seven seed in the 3A tournament, and will be taking on the two seed in Western Dubuque. Softball is the top overall seed in the 3A tournament, and will be taking on the eight seed Burlington in the first round.
Husky baseball entered postseason play with a losing record but win three straight against the top three teams in the substate to come in at 16-14. Western Dubuque is 29-11. This is the second consecutive year that the Huskies have made it to the state tournament, falling to Wahlert Catholic 4-1.
The Huskies offense has really broken through in the postseason, after averaging five runs per game in the regular season, they scored 32 in their postseason run including 19 in their substate championship against Webster City. Pitching will be important for the Huskies, as they are projected to throw Justin Hackett, who has had a wonderful season with a 0.84 ERA.
Winterset softball 34-4 while Burlington enters with a 20-13 record. Winterset was able to defeat a pesky Fairfeld team 4-3 in their regional finals while Burlington defeated top ten Clear Creek – Amana 1-0 in extra innings. These two faces are not familiar with each other, having not faced off since 2007.
Winterset softball is making their third straight appearance at state and 12th overall. They are a three time state champion including winning it all in 2020. They finished 3rd in the 2021 state tournament, with this being the 2nd consecutive year that they are the top overall seed in the bracket.
The Huskies are an extremely well rounded team and will be continue to rely on Jena Young, who has put up some high numbers this year. The state leader in home runs at 20, she will be looking to spearhead the Husky attack that has averaged 7.7 runs per game.

The softball game will begin at 3 pm with pregame coverage to begin at 2:45 pm from Kruger Seeds Field. The baseball game from Duane Banks Field has a start time of 7:30 pm, with pregame coverage to begin at 7:20.
