Clean up continues across Greene County in the aftermath of a thunderstorm early Monday morning.
Greene County Conservation Director Tanner Scheuermann tells Raccoon Valley Radio Spring Lake Park had several fallen trees and tree limbs, with at least four campers that sustained damage due to the falling trees. Crews have since re-open all blocked roads in the park and there is some minor cleanup happening on the Raccoon River Valley Trail.
Acting Greene County Emergency Management Coordinator Jack Williams talks about the other major damage that the storm caused.
“There was damage to a couple of buildings on Main Street in Churdan, along with the Churdan school also had some damage. But for the most part just a lot of power lines and trees down, Spring Lake (Park) was hit pretty hard again. We had a couple of campers stuck from trees that fell across their campers. But we did get them out with no injuries.”
Another issue was a power pole that caught fire and Williams describes the details of that incident.
“The power line for Alliant (Energy) had fell and wrapped around the pole and grounded through the pole to the ground, obviously, and started the pole on fire. We had to wait until Alliant (crews) shut the power off and were on scene before we could extinguish the pole.”
Williams adds crews were on scene for 45 minutes until the flames were extinguished. He says there were no injuries reported.
Greene County Engineer Wade Weiss tells Raccoon Valley Radio secondary roads crews are out removing debris from county roads and will assist removing uprooted trees at Spring Lake Park, along with temporarily closing roads for safety reasons as power companies attend to downed power lines.
The City of Jefferson reminds residents to neatly stack sticks and tree branches in armloads at curbside, along with other yard waste placed in biodegradable bags with stickers. Residents can also deposit those items at the yard waste dump site at Daubendiek Park.
The National Weather Service issued three severe thunderstorm warnings for Greene County from 4:09-5:30am.
