The high school softball season is over for Greene County. Coach Tom Kennedy’s Rams lost 1-0 to Saydel at Saydel in Des Moines on Saturday night in a Class 3A Region 2 semi-final to finish with a 13-13 record, while the seventh ranked Eagles move on to Tuesday’s Region 2 final with a 30-4 mark. The game was  heard on KG98 and steamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.

The Eagles won all three meetings vs. Greene County by scores of 3-2, 5-0, and 1-0. Pitcher Dakota Lake fanned 15 Rams on Saturday night and freshman slap-hitter Payton Kokenge’s opposite field single to start the sixth inning was the only hit Lake allowed. Greene County ended up loading the bases that frame, but couldn’t come up with the tying run. the Rams also stranded a runner at third in first inning, and left another at second base in the third.

Junior Emma Hoyle was sharp on the pitching rubber for the Rams, allowing only a fourth inning run. A soft opposite field single to right from Kathryn Van Houten scored Riley Pecina, who walked to start the inning. Hoyle walked just two batters, one intentional, while striking out four and allowing six hits.

Carmyn Paup is the lone senior on the Greene County team. This season was the first since 2016 where the Rams did not lose more games than they won.
