A Marshalltown man was recently sentenced to prison for his involvement in stealing an ATM machine from Wild Rose Casino in Jefferson.
According to court documents, 52-year-old Richard Harris pled guilty to a Class C Felony for first degree theft. As per the plea agreement, Harris was sentenced to ten years in prison and given credit for time already served.
The charge stems from when Harris and another suspect, 39-year-old Jorge Palacios of California, stole an ATM machine from the casino on January 28th. They used a hand cart and took the ATM through a fire exit and loaded it into a truck that was also stolen from Boone County. The stolen vehicle was later found abandoned when it ran out of gas. The two were found in another vehicle on January 29th, along with a third individual, 42-year-old Steven Curvin, who admitted to breaking into the ATM machine in his shop in Story City, where the ATM was recovered.
Harris was also ordered to pay over $15,000 in victim restitution, court costs and court appointed attorney fees. As part of the plea agreement, the other charges against Harris, including two Class D Felonies for second degree theft and criminal mischief, were dismissed.
