The US House of Representatives recently passed legislation that hopes to bring down gasoline prices along with food and create competition.
Iowa’s Third Congressional District Representative Cindy Axne says the Lower Food and Fuel Costs Act is going to address the skyrocketing fuel and food prices with a key component to fix the food and agriculture supply chain issues.
“Because the input costs for our farmers have risen because of fertilizer being a key component for the increase in the cost of food. And we do not produce the fertilizer here, so we are having a struggling time getting it and it’s costing our farmers a lot, which in turn is increasing the cost of food.”
She adds the bill looks to increase access to biofuels to lower costs at the pump, and increase the competition in the meat and poultry sectors.
“Strengthen competition in the meat and poultry sector by stronger enforcement and alleviating the supply chain bottlenecks that are out there, which are leading to meat packing companies, setting bad prices for producers and consumers alike. So that should help lower those costs.”
HR 7606 passed by a vote of 221 to 204 and will now head to the Senate for a vote.
