After a recent incident in Dallas County that led to residents being without power during warm temperatures, there are some things you can do to stay cool during periods of no power.

Dallas County Emergency Management Specialist Josh Heward says people can do a few things including wearing loose or lightweight clothing and stay on the lowest and coolest level of your home.

“Close all the drapes and blinds on the sunny side of your residence to keep that sun off. Drink plenty of water, avoid any heavy meals, caffeinated drinks and alcohol. You can also close off any unused rooms in your house and place a towel underneath the door to seal it off and that will keep the heat from seeping into that cooler space.”

Heward tells Raccoon Valley Radio people could also take a cool shower, wet their hair or wear a wet bandana. He adds there are other locations people can use to cool off.

“If none of that works, consider going to an air conditioned public place during those warmer day time hours and that is assuming that they also have power.”

Heward says when thinking about taking a shower people should take a cool shower and not a cold one.
