The latest warmer spring weather in the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area might put strain on some crops.
Guthrie County Extension Field Agronomist Mike Witt says that there should be enough moisture still in the ground from last week’s rainfall to rapidly grow soybean and corn crops with the current warmer temperatures. He says this large growth could cause some problems.
“With this rapid growth we’re going to see. There might be some instances of yellowing out in some of these corn fields, and that would be referred to as some of that rapid growth syndrome that might occur on certain individual hybrids.”
Witt expects with the warm temperatures drying washed out areas farmers will be able to do replants this week. According to the latest Crop Progress and Condition Report from the Iowa Department of Agriculture, corn emergence has reached 95 percent which is one week behind last year and 97 percent of soybeans has been planted which is four behind the national average.
