The landscape of voting in Dallas County changed between the 2018 and 2022 primary elections during the midterm election years, as there was more registered voters and participation this year. 

During the 2018 primary election there were 58,796 registered voters in Dallas County and 7,243 ballots were cast for a voter turnout of 12.31-percent. This past Tuesday, registered voters shot up to 70,625 with 10,840 ballots cast for a voter turnout of 15.35-percent. 

During the 2018 and 2022 primary elections there were contested races and for this year it was Iowa House District 28 with Sonya Heitshusen edging out Tom Walton for the Democrats, Dallas County Treasurer which saw Mitch Hambleton defeating Josh Chapman for the Republicans and Dallas County Recorder had ReNae Arnold defeating Peggy Ann Sieleman for the Republicans as well.

The stages were set for the general election in November as Iowa Senate District 14 will be between Republican Jake Chapman and Democrat Sarah Trone Garriot and Democrat Sonya Heitshusen will take on Republican David Young for Iowa House District 28 and Republican ReNae Arnold will face Democrat Benjamin Litton for county recorder. 

The results from this past Tuesday’s primary election will remain unofficial until the Dallas County Board of Supervisors conduct a canvass of the results from the 46 precincts which should take place at the next Board meeting on June 14th.
