Dallas Center – Grimes girls soccer was on the hunt for bringing home the first state championship in program history on Saturday, with the Mustangs able to get revenge on Waverly – Shell Rock in the championship game in 2A, winning by the score of 2-0. The Mustangs are able to complete an undefeated season with a 22-0 record, Waverly Shell – Rock concludes their year at 18-2, both losses to DCG.
These two showed why they were the two best in 2A through the majority of the year, as both teams have limited chances in the first half with both defenses being dialed in against two creative attacks. The halftime score was 0-0. The second half, DCG finally breaks through the ice with 34:41 with Avery Korsching firing home her third goal of the state tournament, the senior making it 1-0. After both teams missed on a pair of great opportunities for goal, DCG was able to put the nail in the coffin with 11:43 left, sophomore Olivia Cyr hitting home the dagger from a perfect pass from sophomore Kylie Knief as DCG was able to pull away down the stretch.
The two goals that the GoHawks give up are the most all season by the team. DCG as a team was able to finalize their 14th shutout of the season, getting great work from the defense and goalkeeper Maya Fritz. The team only gave up 10 goals on the entire season, while they were able to score 105 goals, a staggering 95 goal difference for the team.
Four Mustangs were names on the 2A all tournament team, with junior Elena Bartak, Knief, Fritz, and the captain of the all tournament team in Korsching.
Coach Dan James will be joining the Raccoon Valley Bank Dallas County PM sports page at Monday night at 6 o’clock to break down the action.
The Mustangs will be graduating five players from the program including three big starters in Korsching, Alexia Henrichs, and Emma Smith. The Mustangs will be bringing back the majority of their roster, as this team will be reloading for 2023. That said, this program will enjoy this for a little while, as the 2022 DCG Mustangs are champions in the state of Iowa.
