The 2022 Iowa Legislative Session saw multiple pieces bills signed into law and the session also kept lawmakers in the capitol past its initial end date.

Iowa House Representative for District 19 Carter Nordman says he feels lawmakers were able to accomplish historic legislation ranging from sweeping tax reform to investing in childcare and defending Second Amendment rights.

“Obviously, it went a little long but at the end of the day I do think that we pushed Iowa forward. We delivered on the promises that we set out when we campaigned back in November of 2020 and Iowans sent us there to do a job and I think we accomplished that job in the last two years. So, I am looking forward to getting back on the campaign trail, continuing to listen to constituents so we can come back and continue the work of Iowans.”

Nordman tells Raccoon Valley Radio when it comes to ending the session on time, it can be difficult when you have lawmakers needing to come together and agree on a topic. Nordman says there was some difference in language for school choice which wasn’t able to be passed this year which kept them from finishing on time.

“Ultimately, we did come to an agreement, got the budgets done and moved forward. A lot of times these sessions run a little longer, our (Iowa) Constitution tells us how long our sessions can be but they do tend to run a little longer if there is some roadblocks.”

The 2022 Iowa Legislative Session was originally scheduled to end on April 19th but ran until May 25th before lawmakers adjourned.
