If you are an avid boater who likes getting out on the water, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources has some reminders relating to invasive species.

Conservation Officer Dustin Eighmy says invasive species can range anywhere from plants to the Zebra mussels. Eighmy says when people get their boat out of the water there are some things people should keep in mind as it can be costly to renovate a pond or lake if the invasive species gets into the water.

“By law when you take your boat out of the water, whether it’s a fishing boat or any type of boat in the public waters that you must remove your plug from the boat, drain your livewells, remove all that water, has to be open during the transport to avoid spreading those invasive species.”

Eighmy tells Raccoon Valley Radio people should bring ice and a cooler or a bucket to transport the fish they catch.

“We don’t want you transporting that water from that lake in a bucket with the fish in there and then taking it home or taking it to another lake, possibly that you’re gonna go fish, and potentially spreading those invasive species.”
