The postseason for the Greene County boys’ soccer team didn’t last as long as they would have liked, but the Rams went 10-5 and tied for first place in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference with Nevada and Perry.
Nevada qualified for the Class 1A State Tournament in Des Moines next week and Greene County owns a 3-2 win in overtime vs. the Cubs during the regular season. Defense was a big part of that victory in holding the Cubs to half of their usual goal total. Head Coach Carl Behne talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about what it takes to be good on defense. “You’ve got to have guys that defend and have guys that are not afraid to attack the ball. You’ve got to have guys that have speed, at least a guy or two on that back line that have some speed that can keep up with those speedy wings and make up when there’s a through-ball and we get caught flat footed. Nate Black for us is definitely one of those guys!”
Black and Brenner Gallagher were the only senior starters this season, so nine starters are eligible to return, along with some capable reserves.
