With the weather getting warmer, people are getting back to maintaining their yards and the City of Perry reminds residents to keep grass clippings out of the streets and alleyways.
For Perry residents it is illegal to mow or place grass, leaves and other yard waste into the public streets as it can cause the clogging of storm sewers but grass clippings in the street can also be slick which can be a safety hazard for motorcyclists and bicyclists. Perry Public Works Director Jack Butler talks about the issue.
“I’m sure folks forget it or maybe it was a little wet and the grass was a little taller and they weren’t able to keep after it and so they’ve got extra grass clippings coming out of that mower chute. It makes a mess, for bicyclists, motorcyclists them grass clippings laying on that asphalt and that concrete it’s just like driving on ice for them so that’s a humongous safety issue for them folks and then on the other side of that them grass clippings wash down to our storm intakes and anything that has a grate on top of it them clippings will plug up that grate then the intersections flooded and people are calling about that.”
