One Dallas County Hospital nurse was recently announced as this year’s DAISY Award winner and she shares her thoughts on being named the recipient.

Tonya Summerson has been a registered nurse for 27 years now and last week she was announced as this year’s DAISY Award winner which recognizes and thanks nurses for their work. Summerson says

“I was very blessed to be awarded this award. I myself, since I have been (a) manager in the past, I was always the one giving out the award. So, I felt very humbled when I received this award. It does show that all my hard work was being seen and that just put a smile on my face.”

Summerson tells Raccoon Valley Radio throughout her career many things have changed during her time as a nurse such as procedures and how they were when she learned them going through nursing school.

“More things have changed to prevent infection, so a lot of procedures have changed from when I learned them in nursing school 27 years ago until now a lot of things have changed for infection prevention purposes. Also, just the medical advancement throughout the years. Our medications have become more advanced, treatments have become more advanced.”

Summerson was honored with the DAISY Award from the Dallas County Hospital on May 9th .
