It’s State Qualifying Meet day throughout Iowa today in all four classes. Hot and humid conditions are expected to greet athletes, including those from Greene County High School. The Rams travel 120 miles southwest to Treynor for a Class 2A coed meet. The top two finishers in each event are automatically qualified for the Coed State Meet May 19-20-21 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Third place and lower finishers may also qualify for State if their performance is among the eight best that didn’t finish first or second in any of the eight 2A qualifying meets.
Coach Derek Merk’s Greene County girls and Coach Chad Morton’s Greene County boys will have several opportunities to advance to Drake Stadium, but the competition in Treynor is expected to be stiff. In addition to the host Cardinals and the Rams, schools assigned to Treynor are ACGC, Panorama, West Central Valley, Clarinda, Kuemper Catholic, Missouri Valley, Red Oak, Shendandoah, Underwood, and Van Meter. Starting time is 4 p.m.
Paton-Churdan goes to a 1A qualifying meet in Earlham, which also begins at 4 o’clock.
