With the Iowa Legislative session hitting its third week of overtime, there doesn’t seem to be a clear timetable of when lawmakers will gavel out for the year.
District 24 Senator Jesse Green of Boone says the two biggest hang-ups are on school vouchers and the state’s overall budget. He addresses the rumor of the legislative session going beyond the June 7th Primary election.
“It wouldn’t shock me if it went past the primaries and making sure that the government is working and everything runs smoothly. It doesn’t really matter as far as the primaries. I’m sure it might be inconvenient for some of those members that are in primaries. But at the end of the day, when it comes to taking care of the people’s business I don’t think it matters one way or another when session gets out in the near-term, whether that’s before the primaries or not.”
Green explains for the state’s budget discussions, what has been the biggest sticking point.
“There’s a $72 million difference between the chambers (of the House and Senate). What is unique with this situation is a big chunk of that is the difference between the Human Resources budget of the House and the Senate. When these negotiations start between the chambers, I think most eyes are going to be on the Human Resources budget.”
The next fiscal year begins July 1st.
