Greene County and Nevada met in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference high school boys’ soccer last night in Grand Junction and Coach Carl Behne’s crew made it a memorable night. It was Senior Night for the Greene County boys and their last home match of the regular season. The Rams won 3-2 to improve to 7-4 in a contest that was tied 2-2 after regulation. In the 10 minute overtime the Rams won with just 1:38 remaining in the extra session. All three Greene County goals were scored by Gesser Aguilar, his eighth, ninth, and tenth of the season. Nevada’s boys are ranked sixth in Class 1A by the Iowa Soccer Coaches Association and they fell to 11-6 with the loss. Drew Robinson had both Cubs’ goals, his 19th and 20th of 2022. Robinson’s second goal tied the game with just 1:54 left in the second half.
The win is the first for Greene County over the Cubs in the four seasons of the Rams’ program. It was also the first this season for the Rams over a ranked team. Jack Hansen had an assist for the Rams and Aguilar scored the game winner on a throw-in from Brenner Gallagher.
Tuesday’s meeting may not be the last this season. Both teams are in the same Class 1A Substate with Nevada on the top half of the eight team bracket and the Rams on the bottom half. After regular season non-conference matches at East Sac County in Wall Lake May 13 and in Panora on May 16 vs. Panorama, the Rams will open the postseason in Grand Junction vs. Chariton, who was 6-6 through Monday of this week.
The sixth ranked Nevada girls won 12-0 over Greene County in Nevada last night. The Cubs improved to 8-5 while the Rams fell to 1-9.
