A charity event is happening this weekend as a way to raise funds through competitive means.
The Inaugural Legislative Slow-Pitch Softball Game will take place Sunday at Principal Park in Des Moines. The game will include Senate and House Republicans versus the Senate and House Democrats following the Iowa Cubs game, which starts at 1:08pm against the Indianapolis Indians. The two major political parties have designated their respective charities that they will be playing for. The Republicans have selected the Puppy Jake Foundation and the Democrats support the Iowa Food Bank Association.
District 24 Senator Jesse Green of Boone is excited for the contest to be played on the diamond at Principal Park.
“What a great event to raise money for charitable causes, but also bring the legislature together. I don’t care if there’s some divide within the Republicans and divides between parties. So I think a little friendly softball game is a great way to finish session, and I can’t wait to do it.”
Green says he will be the Republican’s starting shortstop, even though he has no prior playing experience, but jokingly will be ready to play ball.
“I think they have this idea that I’m in pretty good shape, which I am, but just because you’re in pretty good shape doesn’t mean you can catch a fastball coming at you 100 miles per hour. So we’ll see what happens here.”
The charities will receive a portion of the ticket sales, as well as sponsorships from the event. When you purchase the tickets to the softball game, the tickets will also allow you admission to the Iowa Cubs game. Click the links below to purchase tickets.
