For track & field coaches, athletes, and fans, this is about as good as it gets. The Drake Relays in Des Moines are underway and 2020 Greene County High School graduate Carter Morton, now in his second year at the U. of Northern Iowa, finished in fourth place in the Decathlon on Thursday with a personal best score of 6,697 points. It was his third career decathlon and the first of 2022. Morton’s younger brother, Jackson, is a Greene County senior who runs this morning in the prelims of the boys’ 110 meter high hurdles at 8:15 a.m. The field of 32 will be trimmed to eight for the finals and that race is set for 10:35 a.m. today.

Chad Morton is the boys’ head track & field coach of the Rams and last night he had his squad at Story City for the Roland-Story Norsemen Invitational. Greene County was seventh in a 10 team field and because of Drake Relays and the rescheduled Coed Gilbert Tigers Relays today, which was postponed on April 25, the Rams did not run as heavy on Thursday as usual. The top performance for the Rams came in the 4 x 200 meter relay with Camden Strennen, Jackson Morton, Bryce Stalder, and Jesse Miller in 1:34.29, a season best, good for second place.

The Drake Relays 4 x 100 meter relays preliminaries are Saturday at 9:15 a.m. for girls and 9:45 a.m. for boys and Greene County has quartets in both events.
